Stop! Before you hire a mover ... read this!

The UTC regulates household goods moving companies that provide service within the state of Washington.
For information about rules that apply to moves from Washington to another state, visit the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Moving Your Household Goods

      Before You Hire a Mover - WARNING! There are currently unlicensed moving companies taking advantage of people, holding goods hostage for large sums of money, and illegally inflating estimates. Before you hire a mover, confirm that they are permitted with the UTC. The UTC ensures that permitted companies charge fair and proper rates, carry insurance and keep their vehicle safely maintained.

      List of Registered Movers – All moving companies who are paid to move residential belongings within the state of Washington must be registered with the UTC.

Rules and Rates for Moving Companies

      Tariff 15-C - Movers are required to charge rates within a minimum and maximum range as stated in this document. Companies can compete for your business within this set range. Tariff 15-C also provides information on terms and conditions of services.

    Damage Claims
        Loss and Damage Protection Options - UTC has limited control over damage claims. If you have filed a damage claim with your moving company, and they have not responded, call the commission for assistance at 1-888-333-WUTC (9882).
    Complaints
        Problems with a Mover? - If you have a dispute with your moving company, you should first try to resolve it with the company. Many disputes can be resolved by asking for a supervisor. If you are not satisfied with the response from your moving company, call our Consumer Protection Help Line at 1-888-333-WUTC (9882) or fill out our on-line complaint form.
