Trim your garbage budget by recycling more Trim budget by recycling more You can probably save on your garbage bill by recycling more and throwing away less. By putting less cans out on the curb, you can shrink your garbage bill. Curbside pick-up of your recycled materials makes recycling easier and the range of materials recycled has expanded in recent years. You not only have the opportunity to recycle glass and cans but other materials as well depending on your hauler, including mixed paper, newspapers, certain kinds of plastic and yardwaste. Your recycling pick-up service is a part of your garbage pick up service. But while setting out more garbage will cost you more, the same does not hold for your recycling. Most companies charge a fixed monthly rate for your recycling pick-up service regardless of how little or much you use it. In fact, you pay for it even if you do not recycle. In contrast, the more garbage container you set out, the more you pay. If you can reduce the size or number of cans you use through recycling or reduction in waste, you can change your service to a less-expensive option. So, in addition to keeping more of your money, you can feel good about putting less in the landfill. Here are the four R's to a lower garbage bill: Reduce. Avoid packaging. Recycle. Why not? You pay for it. Reuse items such as bags and containers. Review & adjust your service. |
