Williams pipeline leak near Medical Lake

Williams' Northwest Pipeline has reported a leak on its 16-inch natural gas transmission line which runs from the Columbia River to Spokane. The leak is in a rural area of Lincoln County about eight miles southeast of Medical Lake and about five miles east of Edwall. The nearest residence is approximately 1,500 feet away. This section of pipeline has a maximum allowable operating pressure(MAOP) of 811 pounds per square inch. Williams is reducing that pipeline pressure to 50 to 60 percent of the MAOP which will prevent the possibility of a pipeline rupture and allow for repair work to be safely conducted. Meanwhile, the company is preparing the equipment and materials necessary to create a bypass which will allow the leaking section to be inspected, removed and replaced.
Williams discovered the leak today after a routine aerial survey last week noted a possible problem with vegetation. Gas leaks can suffocate nearby plants by displacing oxygen. Washington UTC pipeline safety staff is expected to be at the site of the leak when the bypass and repair work are conducted.

UPDATE ON PREVIOUS NOTICE Williams Pipeline Leak Fixed On May 24, Williams reported a leak on its 16-inch natural gas transmission line which runs from the Columbia River to Spokane. The leak was in a rural area of Lincoln County about eight miles southeast of Medical Lake and about five miles east of Edwall. The leak originated from a crack in the pipe wall resulting from the pipe bearing down on a rock (rock impingement). The damaged pipe section has been removed and service has been brought back to normal operating pressure.
