Consumer Alert: Hiring an illegal mover is risky business

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Looking to hire a moving company? Check with the state, before it’s too late!

The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC) warns that just because a moving company advertises that it is “licensed and insured” does not mean it is. Only moving companies permitted by the UTC are allowed to perform residential moves within the State of Washington. Consumers who hire companies operating without a UTC permit may have little or no recourse if their belongings are damaged, lost or stolen.

UTC staff conduct regular safety inspections to help ensure the equipment and trucks used by permitted companies are in safe working condition. Customers of non-permitted companies have no such assurance that a company has safe equipment or proper cargo insurance. State laws require permitted companies to conduct background checks and drug testing on potential employees. Because a mover interacts so closely with customers in their homes and is entrusted with their belongings, these measures are designed to protect the customers’ possessions as well as their safety.

The UTC conducts regular investigations to ensure in-state moving companies are permitted, insured and in compliance with state laws. In 2008, UTC staff investigated more than 60 alleged illegal moving companies.

The UTC enforces state laws governing residential in-state moving companies and can assist customers who have complaints. Legally permitted companies are required to include their UTC permit number in their advertising. When looking to hire a company, check for a valid permit number with a prefix of THG or HG, such as HG-555555.

Before a customer even packs a box, he or she should first call the UTC and confirm the company’s permit is valid. The customer can also find out how many consumer complaints have been filed against the company.

The commission offers tips and a consumer guide for a safe move at www.utc.wa.gov/movingtips.

The UTC is the state’s watchdog agency in charge of enforcing consumer protection and safety regulations for more than 200 permitted residential moving companies operating within Washington. Movers must charge proper rates, carry insurance and keep their vehicles safe. The commission does not regulate interstate moving companies.
